Out of Town and Out of Touch

I am still on the road. It's strange to not have internet access for so many days. Not only do I need it for work, but I am missing my people-contact time!

As I sit here writing, obviously finally online again, I am listening to my granddaughter cry as the new parents try to put her to bed. She is a spirited baby, obvious even at six months old. She really fights falling asleep. I like to think that she is afraid of missing the action.

When I was a child, I hated falling asleep. Come to think of it, so did my own children. They stopped napping around age one. Anyway, my parents would often find me asleep under the couch in our family room. I would climb out of my bunk bed, creep silently down the lone hallway leading to the family room, then circle right to avoid being seen by either of my parents. They were usually watching a television program, Perry Mason say, and sipping on bourbon and 7-Up. I don't think they ever saw me.

After crawling through the living room and into the kitchen, I would squeeze under the naugahyde sofa in the family room and, apparently, fall asleep.

Just like I imagine my grandbaby feeling, I always hated missing out on anything at all. I still do. I like to be where the action is, and will go without sleep to make it happen. I can sleep when I get home.

  1. Gayle, my daughter didn't sleep thru the night until she was two, she was afraid she would miss something, she told me so when she started talking. Thanks for the memories.

  2. Haing the internet-umbilical cut, even for a short amount of time, is very very odd--isn't it? I have found it is like being shut off from the world.
Ihate the machine, but cannot live without it.
Alas, I am a slave to it...... ;)

  3. Leslie, thanks for sharing that. I will tell my daughter! Hopefully, little baby E won't wait until she's 2!
Anne, I know what you mena. I have tried not checking email, etc., before noon, so I don't get caught up in the morning answering and looking. It's a hard practice to maintain! I guess I still don't want to miss a thing : )

  4. Haha. I like that Leslie's daughter actually told her that's why she didn't sleep;). Little Miss E has SO much firey energy! She's already so clear in telling us that she wants what she wants... NOW! ;) It will be interesting to see what -she- has to say when she starts talking;).

Thanks for putting up with your limited Internet access, momma, and for ALL your help with the house and the baby!

  5. I am grateful for every intimate moment that I share with my children and their precious little ones. I hope I remember to count every second as if in its weight in gold. I am trying to finish three projects myself and feel compelled to limit my time on the computer. You are right...did you recognize Lisa Horkin and her wonderful glass at the Art Affair? The energy is high everywhere even if sales are not too prominent! Imagine and Live in Peace, Mary Helen Fernandez Stewart

  6. Ah, yes, the firey energy of our little Sag baby! I am thrilled that her personality is so clear already...a fire woman in the making.
Mary Helen, I didn't recognize Lisa, so will have to go and look again. As you say, there is nothing more worth its weight in gold than being with our children and their children. I'm glad I am alive to experience it!
